My Take on The Biggest Loser: Part 1

The Biggest Loser is one of the most popular shows on TV today. Basically 20 or so contestants show up to try to lose weight over the course of several months. The contestant that loses the most weight, is the “Biggest Loser.” Clever. Just perusing the Biggest Loser website, I see the show has over 1.2 million fans. In comparison, Trump’s Apprentice has 434,000 fans.

From the Biggest Loser About Page

“With obesity now one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States, ‘The Biggest Loser’ wanted to broaden their reach this season, pay it forward and motivate communities - not just contestants - to get healthy.”

That sounds like a good motivation to me. Lord knows we can all get a bit healthier as my good sister is alway pointing out to me. However, as a fan of the show for the past few seasons, I have been noticing some trends and philosophies that cause me some hesitation when it comes to enjoying the show. And I definitely enjoy see the people lose the weight over the course of a season. It’s actually quite amazing. So, in part 2, I will address some of the things I have observed about the show from a Christian perspective.

Cheers, Eric
